Trail: Lions Head Trail, AT north to Bear Mt. summit, Undermountain Tr. to 41 Date Hiked: 2/10/07 Conditions: These trails are in great shape, mainetenance-wise. A few inches of powdery snow, decent footing, no ice to speak of. Bareboot all the way. Some streams frozen, others running freely. Special Required Equipment: none. Comments: Car shuttle setup used for a 6 hour hike (including frequent rests) from Bunker Hill parking area to summit of Bear, and descent via Undermt. Gorgeous day, light wind. Sunshine made it almost warm enought for t-shirt on Lions Head south ledges, quite a contrast with the north outlook where it was more wintry. Some squalls after noon on Bear, decreasing visiblity. Just a really fun day to be out there. New privy at Brassie Brook Shelter looks interesting. Both Riga and Brassie Brook shelters are in terrific shape. Kudos to the AT crews for such great maintenance of the trail and facilities along the trail. Met one guy out there trimming back the mountain laurel thickets...thank you! Submitted by: Bill J |
