Trail: Mattabassett Trail from Country Club Road to Rte 17 Date Hiked: July 22 Conditions: Trail was well blazed and easy to follow... we really only had one slight navigation error on this trek (due to a missed double blaze) on a well-worn path. If you don't see blazes for a while, you're off the trail. Nice little shelter a few minutes south of Reed Gap (called Cattails Shelter) which was in great shape and fairly inviting. Not really much water to be found along these stretches so make sure to carry plenty (or have wonderful people to leave you a cache as we did.) Comments: This wasn't my overall favorite section of CT trails, but it was still nice enough. Lots of wildflowers, and we saw two deer, an interesting animal skull in a tree, a grouse and a nice view or two -- especially from the overlook over Black Pond and Mt. Higby. Plus, we had a great team consisting of: Tramper Al, Amicus, Dugan, Rocksnrolls, Jade, Greenwood, Cumulus, Jen and me. Our adventures take us off the Mattabessett for a while, but I'm sure many of us will be back to finish up the remaining portions of the trail at some point. Submitted by: poison ivy & co. |
