Trail: Doubletop from Nesowadnehunk Field

Date Hiked: 7/21/07

Conditions: Trail generally clear and in good condition, with some mud down low and shallow running water on the plateau north of the summit. Plenty of bugs (gnats & black flies) during the hike, but they weren't really biting; the mosquitos at our campground in the evening were another story!

Special Required Equipment: Trekking poles recommended for steep gradients; otherwise, nothing special for this short hike.

Comments: My first time on this mountain, which I have admired for years. It's a really nice hike so I'll be back! The "northern" trail from Nesowadnehunk Field is moderate and quick (5 hr. round trip), with one long steep section about 1/2 way up and another short steep section just below the summit. Next time, I may try a south-north traverse, including the old trail via the "Moose Bosom" (yuck) col for variety and challenge. Doubletop's summits, particularly the rocky south peak, are quite scenic and fun to explore. We were in thick clouds until a few minutes before we began descending, when views opened up and we finally got to take some pictures and enjoy the sun.
