Trail: East Kennebago Mountain

Date Hiked: 7/27/07

Conditions: Followed directions from Eighth Ed. of Maine Mt. Guide (1999)and they were pretty much cookbook. Water diversion ditches might be problematic for cars with low clearance. I banged occasionally on my Ford Ranger. Bearings given in the book must have been magnetic rather than actual or at least it appeared that way on the ground. Fairly easily followed herd path from the col up made finding canister much easier than stumbling about the flat summit.

Special Required Equipment: Odometer, ground clearance, compass, and altimeter, or GPS. I always wondered do people who use GPS have an asterisk beside their name on the highest hundred list?

Comments: Route we took near the beginning of the bushwhack followed the stream and was nasty until about 3250' where woods opened up, but that was only navigational difficulty. Lea, the wonder dog, managed to roll if fresh moose poop making it easier for the abundant flies to follow us everywhere. A big cow moose vacated the canister area as we arrived, no doubt the contributing pooper. This was Magzter's first, true highest hundred bushwhack #55, and at fifteen. she is becoming a pretty competent wilderness navigator. Now, if she will only get her driver's license, I can sleep on the way home.
