Trail: Avery and West Peak via Fire Wardens Trail Date Hiked: 8-14 Conditions: Nice gentle grade down below with good footing..past the excellent Moose Falls campsite the climb steepens and after crossing a nice brook reaches steep and unrelenting steps to just below the col..Trail to Avery a little rough in spots but nice on top..trail to west peak gradual with a couple of short steeps Special Required Equipment: needed wind protection today..pole helpful..
Comments: Day 3 of the Over the Hill Hikers in Maine..The Stairway to Heaven..the steep steps up to the col well worth the effort as the views from these summits are unsurpassed..Flagstaff Lake stretching out below..looking down on the Horns...just a great day..met Mountain Mama on the descent..glad it was still light out..I had looked over to the range before and thought they would be good...the ruggedness..the open ledge views..and the fact that we caught a clear day made this a memorable hike..do the Crockers in the clouds..save this for sunshine Submitted by: Silverfox othh |
