Trail: SNOW (CUPSUPTIC) Date Hiked: 9/6/07 Conditions: Dry, clear & cool - another good bushwack day. Special Required Equipment: Same as the previous day, bushwack essentials: maps: both topo & Delorme, compass & GPS if you have one. The topo was good as it more clearly showed the knubble referred to by others.
Comments: We had been into White Cap and NKD the day before and followed the same roads out of Rangeley: Take Route 16 out of Rangeley, stay on Route 16 when Route 4 goes south. Cross the Oxford county line. Just past Kennebago River Road on the right, turn right onto Morton Cutoff Road (across from Arundell Road), there is a small kiosk at the start of the road. SET ODOMETER. At 3.0 turn right at T onto Tim Pond Road/Lincoln Pond Road (you will see a road sign on the left about 3000 feet after you make the right turn). There was an active logging yard at 5.3, at 8.4 you pass the trailhead for West Kennebago, at 10.1 turn left onto Wiggle Brook Road (it is signed with a yellow sign about 50 feet in from Tim Pond Road - it is before the causeway over the Kennebago River - on the west side of the causeway). At 11.2 bear to the right (left is Sol Brook Road), at 12.9 Wiggle Pond Road turns sharp right (another smaller road is straight ahead), cross a bridge at 13.0 and pass a 3 mile marker at 13.3, at 13.4 a newly constructed curve to accommodate logging trucks goes to the left, we stayed to the right - another 200 feet to a T where Wiggle Brook goes left. (turning right will eventually take you to White Cap and NKD). Turn left to continue on Wiggle Brook, at 15.5 there is a sign “no camping - Seven Islands Land Company”, the road becomes closer for a short time, 16.4 we crossed a small bridge. At 17.1, approx. 2600’, at road marker 22, we turned left for the trailhead access. This was a very rough road and should not be attempted without the proper vehicle. We parked at 17.5 and the followed the road as described by papa bear - we got to the grassy spot with the small cairn and took a compass bearing. At the beginning we found an easily identifiable path but, unfortunately lost it and bushwacked the rest of the way. We found the path again at the summit! We returned the same way and found where we went wrong in missing the path - oh well! On this summit, we would have been wise to not follow the compass too close on the way up - it would have saved us a lot of time. On the way out Wiggle Brook, I observed where they had logged somewhat recently and wondered if anyone has hiked Snow from the edge of the clear cut- part way up the mountain. In the winter, this approach might save some miles if going in from Wiggle Brook. Submitted by: JR |
