Trail: Baxter State Park traverse/IAT southernmost section Date Hiked: 9/23-26/2007 Conditions: Sunny, cold, hot, dry (5 minutes rain in 4 days). Very few blowdowns. Stream crossings no problem except for the camera-eating Wassataquoik. Special Required Equipment: Poles- helpful for long straight rocky sections and stream crossings. Tough feet- essential. Comments: Four started, two finished this challenging but fun and very beautiful section. It can be done in as little as about 32.5 miles taking the shortest route from Roaring Brook via Katahdin summit to Matagamon Gate, but we went about 40, including added attractions. Don't underestimate the toughness of some miles though. Wind above treeline was knock-your-socks off strong one day. We felt like we were hiking in Florida the final day.
