Trail: Reddington Date Hiked: 10-06-07 Conditions: As indicated in previous posts, Reddington is now very easy to access. Caribou Valley road can be driven by car just short of the AT crossing. If your lucky enough to have an SUV or the sort, you can proceed about 1.2 miles beyond the AT crossing to a turn around where a small cairn marks the direction to head (left). Once at this point, the trail is similarly a dirt road/fire road that is gradual and easy to follow. From the "turn around" or parking spot you'll hike approximately a mile to a fork. At this fork you'll see a cairn and a few other creative markers such as arrows made from sticks on the ground pointing you to the right. From here you'll see Reddington to the west, distinguished by a tower on the summit. Continue to follow the road in that direction. Soon the road bends slighty to the north and begins to climb a steeper but still a "gradual grade". Take a bearing off a compass if you like (not necessary) while you can still the summit. In another mile or so you see another cairn clearly visible and getting larger with more hikers adding to the pile. Take a left at this point and continue to follow the markings. From here you're only about 10-15 minutes from trail hiking vs walking on the road. Once off the road, the trail is cleared very well and is anything but a bushwhack and simple to follow to the summit. Congratulations to Rich and Armand who are now "official" members of the New England 4000 footer club with this peak. Special Required Equipment: None - very easy hike. Perhaps the easiest of all the 4000 footers in New England to achieve. Trail is marked well and no GPS or compass is needed for navigation. Comments: CANISTER INFO: As you approach the tower on the summit, stop on the trail about 50 feet directly in front of the tower. Look for a small cairn on the trail. This cairn marks a short path to the north leading another 50 feet or so to a tree with the white canister attached at about a height of 7 feet. If you're heading to Reddington please purchase a 4x6 spiral notebook to place in the canister for entries. Previous entries have filled the existing book. You may want to toss another pen or pencil in as well. Submitted by: Frank, Sharon, Rich & Armand |
