Trail: Wright Trail to Goose Eye (east peak) Date Hiked: 11/11/07 Conditions: Sunny, clear day! Around 30 deg, but guessing windchills dipped much lower. On these bald Mahoosucs there is little cover from strong winds. BE ADVISED. Leafy, but decent footing about 2/3 of the way up. The trail hugs Goose Eye Brook, for most of the approach, and some crossings could be difficult in high waters. Ice now closing in spots. Took the north fork up to the east peak of Goose Eye and had snow and ice for the last 1/2 mile, 500 vert ft. Over the bare top, and had great views of the Presidentials, W. Maine peaks, Canada?... Came down the south fork, and found tree cover wanting, as footing can be treacherous on icy spots of rock, particularly in high winds. Perfected the butt-slide, spruce-grab, and swearing needs practice. Special Required Equipment: Crampons almost necessary, despite the fact we did not use them. Did not use poles, but might have been useful as well. Good windproof layers essential. Hot Tang. Submitted by: Mamma Swinka and The Goat |
