Conditions: As you gain elevation the ice patches become larger and there is more snow. By midway up Avalon before the spur trail traction devices would be a safe bet. I had them and was glad. Other hikers went by without them and did have some problems but got through.

Special Required Equipment: Stabalizers. It isn't necessary to have crampons.
