Trail: Dutcher Notch to Escarpment Trail to Rt. 23 Date Hiked: 10-19 - 10-21 Conditions: I hiked in from Colgate in pouring rain and set up camp before Escarpment trail. The trail was wet but not overly muddy. The next day I saw a Great Heron in the marshes before escarpment. About a mile from escarpment trail, I came up a little hill and a black bear was drinking some water. It ran off into the woods uphill on the right hand side. The escarpment trail has some downed trees and loose rocks.I camped on the ridge by Arca Point.I had to go to the creek on Big Hollow Road for water which added 2 miles RT.The trail between WHP and Rt. 23 was muddy, slippery, and crowed with people. Overall I did about 20 miles and had no trail problems other than a couple of trees in the way which didn't take much effort to get around. About halfway down Windham, I spotted a porcipine midday and it climbed a tree to get away. It is VERY muddy down by the road. Submitted by: Todd Wilday |
