Trail: Mt. Colden via Trap Dyke

Date Hiked: 10/27/07

Conditions: Wet! There was a ton of water coming down the dyke which had to be crossed several times, as well as climbing in it a couple of times. The slide above was extremley wet as well. There were small streams running down it because of the constant rain. On the other side of the mountain (the foot path leading back down) the trail was a stream for a good portion of it. The water level at marcy dam must have risen a foot over about a 4-5 hour period.

Special Required Equipment: Gators for the mud, waterproof jacket and pants, and waterproof boots. I was dressed in waterproof clothes from head to toe and was still soaked by the time I reached the top of the dyke (but that was also because of the rain).

Comments: Not the smartest climb to do in the rain or wet. many parts were very slippery and required very careful footing. Also, a rope would be a good idea. We had one but decided not to use it. If you dont like exposure, then you wont like this climb, especially on the top slide portion, where a slip could result in a very long fall. This was not the smartest or safest climb in the rain, but it was still fun.
