Trail: Pine Hill-West Branch Trail From Eagle to Balsam Date Hiked: 11/3/07 Conditions: There was a good amount of downed beech branches on the sections between Eagle and McKinley Hollow. I removed as much as possible from the trail. Some of this stuff looked fairly new, but I believe a lot of it might have been from the early snow back in October 2005, which took place when beech were still leafed out. Some may have also been from this past springs ice/snow storm, although that seems to not have hit this area as much as the Northern Catskills. Anyway, the PH-WB Trail is now mostly clear of obstructions from Eagle over Haynes to Balsam. There is one large tree down over the trail on Balsam side, a short ways up from McKinley Hollow, and there are still a lot of somewhat overgrown places (thorny berry bushes and scrub beech)on Haynes and Balsam. These areas could use some cutting back. This trail just doesn't get a lot of use or maintainance I suppose. Submitted by:MattC |
