Trail: Slide Mt. - Burroughs Trail Date Hiked: 11/11/07 Conditions: A great day to be out on the trail; bright sun and a nice temperature of 26 degrees F was recorded at 10:45 AM when the summit was reached. Conditions are very good for early November with 3 to 5 inches of powder snow at the top. A few icy spots between elevations 3,200 and 3,600 feet, but nothing impossible, or which would require crampon use. Above approximately 3,600 feet, nicely packed-powder over a tin layer of ice made for efficent travel. Noticed Yak-Trak tracks in the snow, which were worn by others. Special Required Equipment: Donned a puffy jacket at the top to keep the heat in while I enjoyed an early lunch. Brought along the usual gear, including a hard shell and both light and heavy weight hats. 8 inch gaiters were just right. Comments: Met a few nice and interesting people; enjoyed conversing. I look forward to hiking in the Catskills next weekend. Submitted by: Tony Russo |
