Trail: Whiteface XC ski via toll road Date Hiked: 11-18-07 Conditions: Great snow conditions for Nov. Snow along the road started just west of Wilmington with perhaps 4-5” at the tollhouse. Nearly full road coverage except once well above the Lake Placid turn. Some pole scraping but hey – it’s November. Ten to twelve inches from 3000’ to summit. Most of the road covered above the Wilmington turn (sparse on the turn itself). Some drifting and some icy spots (avoidable) during the last ½ mile. Snow covered steps to summit but no ice. Temp in the 20's with almost no wind - even at the summit (RARE!) Special Required Equipment: I saw people with everything from skinny racing skis to wide backcountry gear with cable bindings. Anything workable but with some thin spots up high, you may hit some rocks or asphalt. I used old waxless. With the powder, climbing may have been easier with waxable (green?) Comments: I’ve now skied this 4 times in Nov. and this was by far the best, consistent snow. With the nearly cloud free day, we had lots of company (people and dogs). While up top, we saw perhaps 12+ people. Skiing down, we passed maybe 30+ people with many walking down low. Submitted by: Bob K |
