Trail: Marcy via Garden, John's Brook & Phelps Date Hiked: 11/16-17/07 Conditions: 11/16 Friday - Night hiking from Garden to Bushnel Falls Lean-to on packed snow trail, barely an inch, bare booted all the way, not slippery, smaller streams were slushy or frozen, night was 17 degrees. 11/17 Saturday - light powder about 2-3inches, barebooted all the way dude, sunny & clear, after Slant Rock snow got deeper, further elevations found ankle & knee deep powder. Surprise hip-deep drops in snow are surprising. Snowshoes worthless due to severe rough terrain. Marcy peak unattainable. Waist deep snow (& I'm 6'4") .1-.2 miles from peak. Special Required Equipment: Snoeshoes ... Maybe? I doubt it will get you there due to rough terrain. Try investing in a pair of wings. Dress smart with wicking layers. Warmest temp was 25 degrees. Biggest challenges is to stay cool, dry and not freeze from sweat when you slow down. GAITORS mandatory, at least. Comments: Believe it or not, I managed to bareboot it. It's possible but challenging. Unless the snow gets harder Marcy peak can't be accessed at this time but views near the top are just as amazing. Submitted by: Gunkster |
