Trail: Windham High Peak (escarpment trail) Date Hiked: 11/18/07 Conditions: Lots of wet spots, and several of them were very wet. We parked at Peck Road (took the Elm Ridge - yellow - trail to get to the Escarpment Trail), and the first half mile or so is submerged. As we went up, there were wet spots on and off all the way up to the summit. The snow was about 2" deep at the summit, and in some spots there was a thin coating of ice as well as snow. Special Required Equipment: Waterproof boots, and extra socks (in case, like me, you thought your boots were waterproof only to discover the contrary). We brought yaktrax and did not use them. No need at this point. After enough cold days to freeze all that water, yaktrax at the very least will be necessary.
Comments: We stumbled upon the glider crash site - just shy of the summit on the south side of the trail at a lookout point. Some local hikers told us that the crash occurred a couple of weeks ago, and that the gentlemen involved (both in their 70's) survived with broken bones. Submitted by: Halia and Flammeus |
