Trail: Pitchoff Mt (Cascade Lakes) Date Hiked: 11/23/07 Conditions: Wed-Thur rains, coupled with a overnight freeze has left thin sheen of verglass over then entire mountain (trees too). Thin dusting of 1-3 inches of snow over the ice, but footing is an issue on the steeper portions. Nothing crampons or stabilicers won't take care of, but bare booting would not be recommended. The heavy ice on the trees did put a few trees on the trail. We cleared many out, but there are still a few left. Special Required Equipment: Some traction control needed (our party used Stabilicers & 6-pt half-cramps). Not enough snow to form and effective base yet. Only about 6-8 inches on top, so snowshoes on this 3600' peak is overkill at this point. Comments: Light flurries all day and the temps were PERFECT in the mid-upper teens. It wintertime in the mountains and it was great to get out and get the feel of snow and ice on the face again. Submitted by: Mavs00 |
