Trail: Hunger Mountain from Waterbury Center Date Hiked: 03/11/07 Conditions: The trail is well-packed from bottom to top. There is maybe 2 feet of snow still on the ground at the bottom, and perhaps up to 4 feet just below treeline. Small 'cliffs' that had us scrambling hand over foot just a few weeks ago now have sufficient snow cover that you can just walk right up them. The summit has a fair amount of crusty snow with a decent amount of rock sticking out. Absolutely no ice whatsoever on the trail; sporadic ice patches on the summit. Special Required Equipment: Snowshoes were ideal. We saw guys with crampons, but it looked like they were poking through whenever they stepped near the edge of the trail - lots of postholes. Comments: Like I said there's still LOTS of snow on the ground, although most of it has fallen or melted off the trees by now so the hike up wasn't quite as pretty as it was several weeks ago. Very nice views. Submitted by: Chris |
