Trail: Mt. Mansfield, Long Trail to Profanity

Date Hiked: 5/26/07

Conditions: The long trail is still a bit muddy (the official reopening will be this monday)with a decent amount of snow lingering on the trail towards Taft Lodge. Overall, the trail is in pretty good shape though. Profanity trail is a nightmare. Spring runoff has undercut the snow cover, creating potentially dangerous pits and unstable snowpack on many sections of the trail(Profanity follows the runoff creek bed from the lodge up to the ridge.) I'd say stick to the LT on the ascent, and be extra careful glissading down Profanity if you choose to do so.

Special Required Equipment: waterproof shoes/boots, trekking poles useful as always

Comments: Despite the difficulties, Mt. Mansfield is a beautiful late springtime hike.
