Trail: Stannard Mountain Lookout via snowmobile trail / logging road

Date Hiked: 9/25/2007

Conditions: While this trail never dries out completely, it is dry enough now to make for an enjoyable hike. The terrain is not difficult and the trail is easy to follow. I found one dry path that leads to the shore of Stannard Pond, but it's easy to miss. It is located 140 ft. beyond the first significant side trail on your right as you are heading south.

Special Required Equipment: If you have short legs, you might still need waterproof boots.

Comments: This trail starts at a large pull-off on the south side of Stannard Mountain Road in Wheelock. The pull-off is located 1/4 mile east of the height-of-land on this road. This is a distance of 9.3 miles from Route 5 in Lyndonville.
Distance to the lookout is 1.7 miles. Stannard Pond is halfway in. Nearing the lookout, there are two junctions: turn left at the first and go straight through the second. The view includes Burke Mountain in Vermont, and the Presidential Range and Franconia Ridge in New Hampshire.
