Northeast Weather

There is a saying about the weather in New England, "if you don't like it, wait five minutes - it will change." That saying is not too far from the truth. The weather and its changes in the Northeast can be severe. In fact, the White Mountains can be, and often are, home to some of the "Worst Weather in the World". Mt. Washington, although only 6288' high, can present the most severe combinations of wind, cold and ice in the world. The average temperature at the summit is 26 F, with a record low of 47 F below zero. The average wind speed is 35 mph, with a record wind speed of 231 mph! With winds in excess of hurricane force on an average of 104 days a year and the summit being in the clouds 60% of the time, Mt. Washingt on has earned it's title as The Most Dangerous Small Mountain in the World. This severe weather has contributed to many of the accidents and deaths on the mountain.
